Many people shear away from raw feeding their cats because they have fears about the safety of handling raw meat. 

Before going further, I want to emphasize that the meat you feed your cat should be the same fresh and certified meat that you buy at the supermarket. 

Your List of Kitchen Tools for Handling Raw Meat Safely

Absolutely Required

1. Sharp knife (small enough to easily cut meat off the bone)

2. Cutting board dedicated to cutting meat only

3. Hydrogen peroxide 17% solution (food grade)

4. Spray bottle

5. Glass canning jars with reusable lids (4 oz.)

6. Paper towels

7. Bottle brush that can be put in the dishwasher

Optional Tools

1. Meat cleaver for cutting bones

Process for Safely Preparing Raw Meat for Cats

1. Thaw frozen meat in the refrigerator; thawing it on a counter top overnight opens the door to increased bacterial activity. If you need the meat in a hurry, you can use a microwave, or drop the meat into a pan of warm water.

2. If you choose to use rubber gloves put them on now. Make a “bath” of one part 17% hydrogen peroxide and four parts water. Soak the meat in this solution for several minutes to destroy surface bacteria.

3. Fill a spray bottle with one part hydrogen peroxide (17%) and three parts water.

4. Remove the meat from the bath and rinse it thoroughly in cool running water.

5. If you are feeding chunks to your cat, then place the meat on the dedicated cutting board. Cut the meat off the bone and then cut into chunks. Set aside bones, cartilage scraps, and any skin if you plan to make slurry with your grinder.

6. If you are weaning a kitten, feeding sick cat, or are in the first stages of transitioning your cat to raw food, then dice the meat fine.

7. If you are making slurry grind skin, bones, organs and some meat chunks through your meat grinder.

8. Rise knives in hot water.

9. If blood has congealed on the knife, spray it with your hydrogen peroxide solution and let it sit a few minutes. The peroxide will foam, lifting the blood.

10. Wash knives in hot soap.

11. Spray the knives with the hydrogen peroxide solution and let it sit before drying them and putting them away.

12. Disassemble the meat grinder following the manufacturer instructions.

13. Rise all parts in hot water using a stiff bottle brush to clean out interiors.

14. Wash all parts in hot, soapy water.

15. Rinse all parts in hot water.

16. Dry all parts

17. Spray all parts with a dilute solution of one part hydrogen peroxide and three parts water. Let them sit several minutes before drying the parts and putting them away.

18. Clean the cutting board and the counter tops with hot soapy water.

19. Dry the cutting board and the counter tops.

20. Spray the cutting board and the counter tops with the peroxide solution.

21. Open your clean canning jars and fill them with the food you prepared.

22. Close the jars. If some of the food came over the edges of the jar, clean it with hot water then spray it with hydrogen peroxide solution. Allow the jars to dry and then store in your freezer.

23. Rinse the bottle brush and put it in the dishwasher.

Note about Hydrogen Peroxide

Food grade hydrogen peroxide is generally sold in a thirty-five percent (35%) solution. However, the government requires treating hydrogen peroxide at 35% as hazardous material. Shipping costs are prohibitive, and it would require special storage facilities in your home. The good news is that food grade hydrogen peroxide at 17% is available from online sellers. That can be packaged and shipped as a non-hazardous material, and it can be stored conveniently under your kitchen sink.
