Tunisia’s defence ministry has announced the interception of an Egyptian vessel for “illegal fishing” in the fourth such incident in less than three weeks, according to a statement received by AFP on Saturday.

On Friday, a ship intercepted an Egyptian tugboat with 15 sailors on board, while it was in an “illegal” state of being in the Tunisian fishing area, 136 kilometres (136 miles) east of the island of Gargana in sfax province, the ministry said.

“The Maritime Intervention Team took control of the boat” and took it to the main naval base in Sfax “to take legal action,” she said.

In light of this incident, “the number of Egyptian boats seized by sea army units since December 16th has risen to four,” she said.

Tunisian authorities often intercept unlicensed Egyptian fishing boats in Tunisian waters despite agreements signed between the two countries in recent years.
