After turning it into an empire extending into space exploration… Because of it, he became the richest in the world. Jeff Bezos relinquishes his presidency of Amazon before he reaches the age of 60.
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos becomes the first person in history to make a fortune of more than $200 billion.
Amazon has announced that its billionaire American founder Jeff Bezos will step down as CEO, and he has appointed his successor as head of cloud computing, signaling the company’s transformation from an online retailer to a major online technology conglomerate.
Next summer, Bezos will hand over the keys to the world’s largest online retailer to Andy Gassy, head of the Cloud Computing Division of Amazon Web Services, known as AWS.
On Tuesday, the announcement resolved a long-awaited question of who would replace the world’s richest person at the helm.
Bezos ended his role as CEO at a big end; his career as an online bookseller 27 years ago is now one of the most valuable companies in the world, making three consecutive record profits after losses in previous decades. On Tuesday, Amazon reported quarterly sales of more than $100 billion for the first time.
At the same time, Amazon’s e-commerce has never been this big. Since the onset of the Coronavirus outbreak in the United States, consumers have turned to Amazon to deliver essential goods and medical supplies. While brick stores closed, Amazon hired more than 400,000 additional workers to keep up with demand.
This has put the Seattle-based company at the heart of workplace unrest; more than 19,000 workers have been infected with the CORONA virus, and some employees have protested and demanded that the facility be shut down. Others, at the Amazon Beismer warehouse, Alabama, are seeking to be the first to join a union in the company in the United States.
